People urged to stop irresponsible dog breeding

August 24, 2020

The band ‘Punish The Deed Not The Breed’ are calling on members of the public to ensure they engage in ‘responsible ownership’ of dogs, saying there is ‘an influx of irresponsibly bred puppies in Bermuda”.

Grace Markham explained: “A group that was instrumental in rescuing banned dogs during prohibition has noticed a steady increase in cases of sold or seized litters of pitbull type puppies. On occasion we have helped repatriate and obtain licenses for a number of young and older dogs.

“The requirements for owning a dog on the restricted list are quite clear, and anyone in possession of a puppy who cannot meet these requirements is at risk of seizure and ultimately euthanasia.

“It becomes more and more difficult to find suitable homes that can meet all ownership requirements when we are informed that puppies need to be rehomed with such frequency.

“As pet owners, it is your responsibility to maintain a healthy and legal environment for your pets.

“Failure to do so is animal abuse and contributes to the stereotype that Pitbulls are bad dogs. [When in fact it’s irresponsible ownership].

“In the past we have been successful in sending puppies overseas but it is expensive and has relied on the generosity and kindness of foreigners, it is our problem and we need to own and care for it here. Do not export our problems.

“We want to avoid them being banned again, but the only way to do that is with responsible ownership.

“We can only do this with the help of members of the public.

“It is an offense to buy an illegal dog, but we hear of several litters where puppies are bred and sold for large sums. This only encourages continued breeding.

“If you become aware of an illegal litter please report it to the wardens, you can do so anonymously if you need to.

“We are also sending out a plea asking that people stop paying for them.

“As long as there are people willing to pay for them, these breeders will continue. We must remove profit.

“The SPCA is often at capacity with dogs for adoption, we cannot accommodate the influx of puppies raised irresponsibly in Bermuda.

“The result of this behavior has and will result in the euthanasia of innocent dogs.

“Help us prevent this by raising awareness of the problem.”
