New AKC Position Statement Reemphasizes Support for Purebred Dog Breeding – American Kennel Club

For over 130 years, the American Kennel Club has been dedicated to protecting and promoting the health and welfare of dogs. This is reflected in AKC events, public education initiatives, inspections, and numerous programs that celebrate and encourage responsible dog breeding and the preservation of purebred dogs.

At its April meeting, the AKC Board of Directors approved a new position statement on canine legislation that re-emphasizes the AKC’s commitment to safeguarding the future of purebred dogs and honors the thousands of excellent breeders whose commitment and dedication to their breeds and individual dogs makes purebred dog ownership possible.

The American Kennel Club is dedicated to preserving the future of purebred dogs. The AKC honors purebred dog breeders whose commitment, vision and high standards have resulted in the development, maintenance and continued advancement of purebred dogs as unsurpassed family and working companions. . Purebred dogs exhibit consistency in size, appearance, temperament, and instincts. This allows future owners to choose a puppy that fits their particular lifestyle and increases the likelihood of a long, successful life in that home. AKC is proud to champion purebred dogs, breeding for type and function, the sport of purebred dogs, and breeders who are committed to the health and welfare of dogs and the preservation of their unique breeds.

This, along with clarifications to AKC policy on sterilization laws, has been added to AKC position statements that reflect our commitment to the health and welfare of all dogs, the preservation of purebred dogs and the protection of the rights of responsible dog owners and breeders.
